The PAH houses one of the major Queensland Health Pathology Services. Ancillary services includes Pastoral Care and Volunteer Services. The PAH plays a lead role in medical research, undertaking research programs with affiliated universities. The PA Research Foundation, which is situated on campus, is dedicated to fundraising to support PAH research activities. Woolloongabba is a thriving inner city suburb located only one kilometre from Brisbane's central business district. Capital Works or Recent Improvements:
Princess Alexandra Hospital has a capital works program to ensure it is well placed to provide the best possible care to Queenslanders now and in the future. The hospital has developed a campus master plan as a practical interpretation of the hospitals strategic clinical plan, with a focus on buildings, support infrastructure and the physical environment. The master plan details the proposed physical footprint of the PAH for the next 15 years. Recently completed capital works include an expanded Emergency Department that has doubled the size of the previous facility; a roof-top helipad with elevator to ground level allowing timely transfers of critically ill patients; and a Medical Assessment and Planning Unit with 30 new inpatient beds for people requiring less than 48 hours of care. The hospital is currently building new radiation oncology and medical imaging facilities, due for completion in late 2011. This development includes the construction of three additional cancer treatment bunkers (concrete "shells" that house linear accelerator cancer treatment machines), support areas for the bunkers, increased treatment planning areas and a new molecular imaging PET/CT scan facility. In a partnership with some of Queenslands leading medical research institutions, a new Translational Research Institute (TRI) is being constructed on the PAH campus and is due to open in October 2012. The seven-storey TRI building will become a world-class research facility comprising laboratory research facilities, plus areas for research support, administration and teaching. Its aim is to enhance and accelerate the translation of medical research breakthroughs into better patient care and assist Australia in having a stronger role in global efforts to address major diseases like cancer and diabetes. The TRI is a joint venture between PAH, the University of Queensland, the Queensland University of Technology, the Mater Medical Research Institute and the Queensland Government. |
