Mount Isa is the mining capital of Queensland. It is a visually attractive city due its immersion amongst the ochre-red soil of the Selwyn Ranges and the cool banks of the Leichhardt River. Established in 1923 following the discovery of one of the world’s richest deposits of copper, silver, lead and zinc ore, the Mount Isa mine is considered one of the greatest mines in the world. Important finds such as ‘Thingadonta,’ ‘Elvis the Pelvis’ and ‘Big Bird’ first emerged from the vats of ascetic acid in front of tourists and visitors taking the lab tour!
“You’re in for one heck of a ride” at the Isa Rodeo! Held in August every year, the Isa Rodeo is a three day rodeo amidst a two week festival that includes a ball, mardi gras, horse racing, country music festival, laser light show, art and photographic exhibitions and other live entertainment. Its a must-do event for EVERYONE in the region!
