Mount Isa is the mining capital of Queensland. It is a visually attractive city due its immersion amongst the ochre-red soil of the Selwyn Ranges and the cool banks of the Leichhardt River. Established in 1923 following the discovery of one of the world’s richest deposits of copper, silver, lead and zinc ore, the Mount Isa mine is considered one of the greatest mines in the world. Mount Isa brings out the adventurous spirit in everyone, with ample places to fish, camp, four wheel drive or to enjoy an outback sunset.
With mining being the main industry of Mount Isa, it is likely that you will be
treating many of the workers from the mine as well as local residents and visitors.
The Mount Isa Hospital offers primary, secondary and community health services in addition to specialist services such as anaesthetics, paediatrics, psychiatry,
surgery and obstetrics & gynaecology.
The Mount Isa district also hosts a range of clinics in speciality and sub-speciality services.
Allied health services include dentistry, dietetics, medical imaging, occupational therapy, pathology, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry, speech pathology and social work.
Outreach services are also present and include allied health, mental health, nutrition, child health, aged care assessment, paediatrics, obstetrics, sexual
health, women's health and palliative care services.
HACC offer home care services to the community and in addition, numerous visiting services are available to Mount Isa. These visiting services include cardiology, obstetrics, general practice, urology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, radiology, neurosurgery, endocrinology, ophthalmology, respiratory medicine, radiation oncology, maxillo-facial surgery, child cardiology, paediatrics, genetics and reconstructive surgery.

the $65.19 million redevelopment of the Mount Isa Hospital currently underway. Improvements to the emergency department, outpatients department, mental health services and oral health services are being made as well as ward refurbishment.

this mining town with over 52 percent of the population undertaking some form of post school qualification. The majority of Queensland Health employees at Mount Isa have reported that their social life increased exponentially when they moved

On the outskirts of Mount Isa is the Riversleigh fossil deposit, the richest and one
of the most important fossil fields in Australia. Incorporated into the outback at Isa complex, the Fossil Centre shows palaeontologic research being conducted on the spot. Important finds such as ‘Thingadonta,’ ‘Elvis the Pelvis’ and ‘Big Bird’ first emerged from the vats of ascetic acid in front of tourists and visitors taking the lab tour!
“You’re in for one heck of a ride” at the Isa Rodeo! Held in August every year, the Isa Rodeo is a three day rodeo amidst a two week festival that includes a ball, mardi gras, horse racing, country music festival, laser light show, art and photographic exhibitions and other live entertainment. Its a must-do event for EVERYONE in the region!
