Doomadgee is an Indigenous community located on the Nicholson River in the far north western corner of Queensland, near the Gulf of Carpentaria. In 1936, after being decimated by a cyclone, the community moved inland to its current location. The early 1980s saw the government move to establish self-government in the community and by 1983 the Gangalidda people took responsibility of the town. Today, Doomadgee is a Deed of Grant in Trust community governed by the Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council.
As a Queensland Health employee working at the Doomadgee Hospital, knowledge of or willingness to learn about Indigenous health is crucial. Other services provided by the hospital include primary health carers, outpatient services, emergency services and observation capacity.
Visiting specialist services to Doomadgee include the Royal Flying Doctors Service, paediatrics, dietetics, oral health and speech therapy.
There are strict regulations regarding alcohol consumption in Doomadgee.
Doomadgee is very much a remote location with limited shopping and public amenities available. However, the unique environment encourages a multitude of outdoor activities such as camping, swimming and fishing, making Doomadgee a paradise for the active couple.
