About Glenden

Glenden is a small mining town located in the Bowen Basin district, west of Mackay. It was established in 1982 to house the employees of Mount Isa Mines Limited who were developing the Newlands Mine. Today, mining is still the main industry in the town with grain, cattle and cane farming also popular.

Glenden is a modern township with excellent housing, school and recreation facilities.

Working in Glenden

As a Queensland Health employee in Glenden, you will be providing health services from the Glenden Community Health Centre.

The centre provides a number of clinics, outreach and visiting allied health services.

Clinics available include a Well Baby clinic, immunisation, community nursing, health promotion, Triple P program, antenatal, post natal and aged care clinics.

Visiting allied health services include counselling, community mental health for adults, children and youths as well as speech pathology.

All nursing services are outreached to Nebo weekly and other health services are outreached as required.

A school based youth health nurse and a mobile women’s health clinic visit the centre also.

Living in Glenden

As with most small towns in Queensland, your social life will dramatically improve while residing in Glenden. Many Queensland Health employees living in rural and remote areas have reported that these close communities make it easier to make friends and as such, you are never short of an offer to socialise after work. Similarly, working in a small team (as you are likely to find at Glenden) means that your workmates will soon feel like family with an immense amount of support coming from your colleagues.

Glenden is a great place to raise children. The local State school is a top rating school for its category, possible because its student body does not exceed 300, making it easier for each student’s education to be personalised. The safe, community minded environment coupled with the recreation centre also makes Glenden a great location for children to grow. Water restrictions apply in Glenden.


Local must see!

Visit Lake Elphinstone, 20km south of Glenden. A natural lake measuring eight kilometres long and one kilometre wide, it has plenty of facilities available for camping and fishing and is one of the few camping sites left that is free and pet friendly.
