About Bowen

Bowen is the provincial, industry-rich town situated on the Whitsunday coast between Mackay and Townsville. Current construction projects in Bowen include the Abbott Point Coal loading facility and the Missing Rail Link project. Industries include beef, mangoes, a salt works, a tomato-processing plant, fish farming and the Bowen Coke Works. Bowen was the location for Baz Lurhman’s film production of Australia starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. Ideal for water lovers, Bowen has seven beaches to choose from, access to islands and excellent fishing and crabbing.

Living in Bowen

When you first drive into Bowen, the influence of the industrial sector on the town is immediately apparent. The salt works greets you on your way into town, before the "Welcome to Bowen" sign or the Big Mango so you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a mining town. Then there’s the town’s general façade. World War beige stone and timber buildings are set against a backdrop of dry outback bush.

Bowen doesn’t flaunt the production of its famous mango, nor its two award-winning beaches and that’s what makes Bowen special. Laidback and modest, Bowen has reasonable priced real estate, exceptionally friendly townspeople and access to all modern conveniences.

The community emphasises sporting activities as a past time.

Local must see!

Any of Bowen’s historical sites must be seen. The 25 murals displayed throughout Bowen’s streets are beautifully painted and depict the town’s history from settlement to present day. The water tower displayed “Bowenwood” upon the arrival of the Australia film crew and an old World War II siren can frequently be heard calling fire-fighters to emergencies.
