Woorabinda is a stand-alone, self-governing Aboriginal community situated on Mimosa Creek, south west of Rockhampton in Queensland’s Central Highlands. It was first established in 1927 to replace the Taroom Aboriginal settlement and elected its first local council in 1985. Today, Woorabinda is the only Deed of Grant in Trust community in Central Queensland. Woorabinda is a thriving community renowned for its aboriginal artwork with easy access to the small township of Baralaba.
The Woorabinda Multipurpose Health Service provides the community with emergency, acute inpatient, residential care, community health, alcohol and drug services, oral health and hostel care services.
As Woorabinda is primarily an Indigenous population, experience or a willingness
to learn Aboriginal health is vital.
A satellite renal unity has been established in the Woorabinda Multipurpose
Health Service facility. This new unit comprises of two self care chairs.
As a Deed of Grant in Trust community, there are strict regulations regarding alcohol consumption in Woorabinda. No alcohol is allowed in Woorabinda. Home-brew of any kind is likewise banned. Fines of up to $75,000 apply to anyone in possession of alcohol.
