Tieri

Tieri, Central Queensland Health Service District
About Tieri

Tieri is a small mining town in the Peak Downs region south west of Mackay. It was established in 1983 to service the German Creek, Oaky Creek and Gregory Crinum coal mines and their workers. A modern town, Tieri is located only 38km east of Capella, the administrative centre of the Peak Downs Shire. As well as housing miners, Tieri also helps support local cattle grazers and crop growers. The people of Tieri make the town a friendly rural place that wholeheartedly welcomes newcomers to the area.

Working in Tieri

The Tieri Community Health Centre provides clinics and a number of visiting health services to the population of Middlemount.

Clinics available include Well Baby, immunisation, community nursing, health promotion, Triple P program, antenatal classes, lighten up program and a cardiac rehabilitation program.

A number of allied health services visit the centre including counselling, community mental health for adults, children and adolescents and speech pathology. Other visiting health services include a school based youth health nurse and a mobile women’s health clinic.

Living in Tieri

Because of the nature of the mining industry, people are frequently moving to where the work is. Sometimes this creates a great deal of strain on people as moving to a new community can be isolating and lonely. However, in Tieri the locals understand that moving to a foreign place is hard and are out-of-their-way friendly to make newcomers feel welcome. An excellent primary school and sporting clubs for the kids sees many young families populate Tieri on a permanent basis while the local Tieri pub is a popular social scene for the adults.

Education in Tieri is a shared responsibility between the local State primary school and Capella State High School. Students completing Year 7 in Tieri are then required to travel to Capella to continue their education. In 2008 and 2009, the results of Tieri State Primary School Year 7 students in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) exceeded the standards set for remote State primary schools in subjects such as numeracy, reading, writing, grammar and spelling.

Local must see!

Visit the local bakery for some delicious old fashioned treats. The bakery’s bread is as soft as clouds and their meat pies have the perfect ratio of meat to gravy.
Watch out for their sweets! Those lamingtons are addictive…
