Mount Morgan is a small historic mining town located on the Dee Ranges south west of Rockhampton. Full of original wooden houses, historic buildings and relics. The town and mountains were named after the three Morgan brothers who staked a goldmining claim on Ironstone Mountain in 1882. The attractive surroundings, quiet environment and peaceful lifestyle makes Mount Morgan an ideal place to enjoy a quiet and relaxed country lifestyle.
The Mount Morgan hospital provides emergency, acute inpatient, aged care and community health services to the community.
Mount Morgan’s wealth and history has been based on its mining and several monuments have been erected to honour this period. One monument however that the townspeople (in conjunction with the Queensland Government’s Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Water) are trying to rectify is the hole left at the base of the Mountain. Filled with acidic water, this ‘lake’ is one of the world’s largest man made holes at 1000 metres long and 300 metres deep.
For an old fashioned yarn, head to the 'Running the Cutter' statue illustrating a famous mining tradition from Mount Morgan. Between 1900 and 1918, buying a beer in 'billy' cans and drinking the beer outside was a common custom for Mount Morgan miners after a day's work and this custom is symbolized in this unique statue.
Pay a visit to the beautiful Japanese Gardens. A gift from Mount Morgan’s sister city Ibusuki, Japan, these gardens feature beautiful water features and diverse textures, a refreshing change from the typical Australian botanical garden.
