Capella is a small town located on the Gregory Highway in Central Queensland. Founded in 1844 by explorer Ludwig Leichardt, Capella accommodates the workers from the nine different coal mines operating in the Bowen Basin as well as local farmers of the sorghum, wheat, sunflowers and cattle industries. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Peak Range, Capella offers a nurturing, family-orientated lifestyle through its excellent educational and community facilities.
The Capella Outpatients Clinic provides antenatal clinic and classes, child health, diabetes education, asthma education and cardiac education as well as a doctor on Tuesday and Friday mornings and a registered nurse on Mondays and Thursdays.
The mining industry has brought a huge amount of growth to Capella. The good news about this growth is that incomes are higher, property value is higher and contemporary conveniences that would otherwise be neglected in small towns, such as the Aquatic Centre, are being developed in abundance. The better news is that many of the miners in the area do not consider Capella their home and operate on a ‘fly-in’/’fly-out’ residential arrangement – they fly in for a few weeks work, then fly back out to their city homes, then fly back in again. This increasingly popular arrangement means that those who are looking to make the move to Capella permanently can reap the rewards of having such high quality facilities available at their fingertips, without having to deal with an overwhelming population.
Take a wander down Peak Downs Street and admire the scenery, particularly the 32 intricately painted street light poles that line the street to form the Capella Pole Murals. Each pole tells a different story about a time in Capella’s history and is painted with exceptional detail and feeling.
