Baralaba is a small country town situated on the banks of the Dawson River. The town is located on the edge of the Banana Shire, a prominent area in cattle, crop and grain farming and rich in natural resources. Baralaba sits on extensive undeveloped coal deposits and was originally a mining town. Some residents of the neighbouring towns of Woorabinda, Duaringa, Wowan and Dululu access services at Baralaba. The quiet and peaceful country town is ideal for those who want a more relaxing, yet active lifestyle.
The current Baralaba Multipurpose Health Service (MPHS) is of timber structure and was built in 1926. A new purpose built MPHS facility is expected to be opened by late 2011. Baralaba Multipurpose Health Service currently provides medical, paediatric, accident and emergency, xray, immunisation, child health and pharmacy services as well as home visiting services when required.
A regular physiotherapy service is provided as an outreach service from Biloela. Other allied health services are arranged by appointment.
The new facilty will have a 2 bed emergency department as well as 9 inpatient
beds which will accommodate acute inpatients and residential aged care clients.
Baralaba is the aboriginal word for 'land of the blue mountain', the town so named because of its proximity to Mount Ramsay which is 15km from the town on the road to Banana. Permission can be obtained from the land owner to hike the 14 kilometres to Mt Ramsay's summit which rewards hikers with a spectacular view of the surrounding area and Dawson River.
The Dawson River flows through Baralaba and is a great spot for fishing and water sports such as water skiing, swimming and kayaking. The Neville Hewitt Picnic area attracts many interstate travellers during the winter months.
Baralaba coal mine excavates coal from the Bowen Basin and provides jobs to the local community. For a look into the past a tour of the local Historical Village can be arranged. Myella Farmstay 15km from Baralaba provides a real life farm experience for guests.
