Napranum is a small Indigenous community on the Cape York Peninsula, close to Weipa. Like many other Indigenous communities in Far North Queensland, Napranum was originally established as a mission. Napranum is supported by a large Rio Tinto Alcan bauxite mine as well as fishing and a growing tourism industry. Napranum is an ideal home for those with a partner in mining or who are looking for a sea change.
The Napranum Primary Health Centre provides accident and emergency, child and adolescent health, women’s health, mental health, sexual health, chronic disease, environmental health and disease control, diabetes and nutritional health, alcohol and substance use and aged care services.
A number of other health services visit the centre and these visiting services include Royal Flying Doctor Services, child health, public health, environmental health, sexual health, mental health, dental services, women’s health and family health as well as a obstetrician and gynaecologist, occupational therapist, chest (thoracic) specialist, nutritionist/dietician services, ophthalmologist, physician, paediatrician, optometrist, and the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS). Additionally, alcohol, drug and sexual health teams visit the Cape communities on a regular basis.
Community health services provided from the multi-disiplinary centre include antenatal clinics, dental, nutrition health visits, school/child health screens, women’s health clinics, diabetic care and a chronic disease program.
The town’s close proximity to Weipa, makes it possible to access all the amenities not found in Napranum. Banks, larger grocery stores and pubs are all popular destinations for Napranum locals who regularly visit Weipa. All school children from Napranum are transported to Weipa for their education. For more information please visit the Western Cape College website.
Alcohol restrictions are in place in Napranum. For more information visit the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services website.
Napranum has access to some of Queensland’s best beaches with soft sand and gentle waves. The fishing off the coast is widely known to be extraordinary and many many small fishing tours will take expeditions to secret fishing spots that
only the locals know.
