Gordonvale is a small sugar milling town with an expanding population due to the tourism boom of Far North Queensland. The town is where the infamous cane toad was first introduced to Australia in 1935 thanks to the misguided belief it would control sugar cane beetle. Now it is one of Queensland’s biggest threats to native flora and fauna. “Walsh’s Pyramid”, a steep 922m pyramid shaped hill, is an outstanding geographical site land marking Gordonvale. Known as “Durrugan” to the local Yidinji Aboriginal people, it is where “The Great Pyramid Race” is held by locals each year. Gordonvale is within easy commute to the major business centre of Cairns.
