Requirements to Practise in Queensland

To work as a dentist in Queensland you must register with the Dental Board of Queensland. If you trained overseas in the United Kingdom, Ireland or New Zealand you may have qualifications which may be acceptable to the Dental Board of Queensland. For more information please refer to http://www.dentalboard.qld.gov.au.

You must obtain registration with the Dental Board of Queensland prior to commencing a position with Queensland Health.

For Overseas Applicants:

You will require a visa to work in Australia. Queensland Health will assist future employees with information about visas during the employment process. Details about visas are available at http://www.immi.gov.au and visa classifications include:

Working holiday makers

If you are a UK dentist aged between 18 and 30 coming to work in Australia, you may be eligible for the Working Holiday Program. This visa allows a stay of up to 12 months and you can do work of a temporary or casual nature for up to three months with any one employer. More information is available at http://www.immi.gov.au

Business sponsorship

Queensland Health may sponsor eligible overseas dentists as Sponsored Business Visitors. If this applies to the position you are nominated for, you will be contacted so you can apply for the relevant visa. Visa classes include:

• Sponsored Business Visitor: (short stay) Subclass 459 — a single entry visa valid for up to three months stay in Australia. Application can only be made outside Australia.
• Temporary Business: (long stay) Subclass 457 — employers can sponsor an employee to stay up to four years.
• Employer Sponsored Migration to Australia: Permanent Entry Form 47ES Employers can sponsor an eligible “highly skilled” employee for permanent residency in Australia for a full-time, fixed-term appointment of at least three years, which does not exclude the possibility of renewal.
