Oral Medicine

Specialist services are provided in the area of Oral Medicine. Oral Medicine is the specialist discipline of Dentistry that stands at the “interface” with medicine. It entails the diagnosis and management of diseases of the oral cavity and associated structures with a focus on mucosal pathology. Management is principally by non-surgical, that is pharmacological, therapies. Clinical practice includes the management of oral ulceration, oral cancer and pre-cancer, oro-facial pain and xerostomia. A substantial part of the practice involves providing care for medically-compromised patients. Services are provided Statewide utilising local dental clinic facilities and a visiting Specialist and there is an increasing use of telemedicine for more remote areas.
