Affectionately referred to as "The Isa" by locals, this oasis in Northern West Queensland encompasses everything that is rugged Outback Australia. The city of Mount Isa is surrounded by the Selwyn Ranges on the banks of the Leichhardt River. To the north lies the isolated Gulf Country and Savannah: the south is home to the Channel Country: the east is rich in pastoral grasslands and in the west the Gateway to the Northern Territory. Mount Isa is a progressive industrial, commercial and tourist centre with a thriving mining industry forming the backbone of the community.
Just 1107 kms from Cairns and 1900 kms to Brisbane. Over 50 nationalities are represented in Mount Isa today and give the city a cosmopolitan flavour. People enjoy living in this modern community, with restaurants, excellent health care, shopping, churches, clubs, service clubs and social activities. Mount Isa is a great place to live and work.
Each August, Mount Isa is transformed into a carnival of festivities and celebrations for a week of the Mount Isa Rodeo - the biggest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere. Most towns have an annual event which brings the communities together in a festive atmosphere, these include Stockman’s Challenges and Camp Drafts. Various race days are held throughout the District including the entertaining ‘Boulia Camel Races’.
