PESCI Information for Candidates

Pre-Employment Stuctured Clinical Interview (PESCI)

What is a PESCI?

A PESCI is one of the assessments of clinical knowledge and skills which an International Medical Graduate (IMG) must undergo as part of the nationally consistent assessment process for IMGs.  It provides an assessment of an applicant's clinical knowledge and experience using a set of structured questions and scenarios, in an interview situation.

Who needs a PESCI?

Candidates who are not eligible for general registration via the ‘Competent Authority’ or Specialist Pathway with the Medical Board of Australia will progress via the ‘Standard Pathway’ to general medical registration.  Queensland Health will require all doctors progressing via the ‘Standard Pathway’ to general medical registration to be assessed as ‘suitable’ for Principal House Officer (PHO) or Registrar positions in the following specialties:

• Anaethesia
• Obstetrics and gynaecology
• Emergency
• Mental Health
• General Medicine
• Intensive Care medicine 

Who requires a PESCI?

• If you are currently employed as a Senior House Officer moving to a Principal House Officer position in one of the above specialties
• If you are currently employed as a Principal House Officer by Queensland Health and you will be changing specialties into one of the above specialties you will require a PESCI
• If you have been offered a Principal House Officer position and you are a new employee of  Queensland Health, within one of the above specialties you will require a PESCI.
• IMGs who are basic trainees of their relevant speciality college; and may be referred to by the college or the hospital as a Registrar who are on the standard pathway to General Medical Registration and are or will be registered with the Medical Board of Australia as a PHO are to undertake a PESCI if:
  • They are new to Queensland Health and or
  • Are moving into a PHO / Registrar position in one of the above specialities.

Who arranges a PESCI?

Each Queensland Health Service District manages and co-ordinates requests in conjunction with the  Queensland Health PESCI co-ordinator.

What happens in a PESCI?

A PESCI consists of questions to explore and validate the skills and experience provided in Curriculum Vitae's.  A panel will pose between three and five clinical scenario questions, relevant to the role description to determine a candidates ability to analyse clinical situations and apply clinical knowledge in a given situation.  The panel will ask questions or may use role plays to obtain information from candidates.

When will you have the outcome of your PESCI?

Outcomes of PESCI will be provided by email.

What happens if you disagree with the outcome of your PESCI?

Requests for a review of the assessment outcome will be considered within three months of receiving the report by writing to the Director of RAPTS.

Please note successful outcome of a PESCI does not guarantee registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

Separate to the Queensland Health PESCI process, the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) currently requires a PESCI to be completed as a pre-registration requirement for IMGs applying for registration via the Standard Pathway or Competent Authority Pathway in any of the following positions: Any non-specialist position in a private hospital All non-specialist senior positions within Queensland Health: Senior Medical Officer (SMO) Medical Officer Right of Private Practice (MORPP) Medical Superintendent Right of Private Practice (MSRPP) Any position in General Practice The Board also reserves the right to request a PESCI to be undertaken for any other position. The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) have been authorised by MBA to undertake the PESCIs on its behalf. You will be required to provide the following at least 14 days prior to your interview:   Copy of photo page of passport. English Language Requirement   Copy of Curriculum Vitae in the Queensland Health standard format. Your Curriculum Vitae must contain a signed and dated statement by the applicant that 'The Curriculum Vitae is true and correct as at (insert date)'. Copy of AMC MCQ Part 1 examination certificate.   Copy of Primary Source Verification of Medical Qualifications ie EICS issued by the AMC or proof that you have commenced the process. If you are unable to supply this please provide a copy of your Primary Medical Degree.
