Real life stories from USA to Australia

"I'd been travelling between America and Australia since 2003, and decided to permanently locate here and work at Logan Hospital, Brisbane 2008.

I was officially recognised as an emergency medicine specialist in Australia in November 2008, and have been really enjoying using my skills in this environment.

There are many of the same challenges we face in the United States, however it's the career opportunities, the wonderful support and friendliness from the team that makes any challenges surmountable".

American emergency specialist Dr Peter Rizzo made the move to Logan Hospital, Brisbane in 2008.

Dr Bruce Campbell is an American emergency physician who made what he calls 'a paradigm shift' by moving to Australia with his wife (Kathleen, a nurse) and their two school-age children in 2003.

"After ten years of tread-mill like shiftwork in Elko, Nevada where I advised local mining companies and private and public ambulance services, I felt the need to grow.  I realised that the fun part of working in Elko was in the creation and development of the contract. So, the 'Adventure Down Under' was an exciting challenge.

What started as a six month working sabbatical became full Australian citizenship, a fellowship with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine and a new life rich in learning and growth in Queensland's Sunshine Coast.  The three key factors in deciding to stay were lifestyle, people and the incredible weather.

We now live on a coastal canal feeding directly into the coral sea.  How neat is that?  My children now have to translate Australian to American when I go to the local store with them.  They are fluent in Australian; whereas, it is a second language to me".

When not touring Queensland and Australia, Dr Campbell spends much of his time performing medical missions, riding the Tour de France route, travelling to places he previously couldn't spell and visiting family in the United States.  For the Campbell family, the Down Under experience has been about quality education and seeing the world from a global perspective.
