PESCI Information for Candidates
(Pre-employment structured clinical interview)
What is a PESCI?
A PESCI is one of the assessments of clinical knowledge and skills which an International Medical Graduate (IMG) must undergo as part of the nationally consistent assessment process for IMGs. It provides an assessment of an applicant's clinical knowledge and experience using a set of structured questions and scenarios, in an interview situation.
Who needs a PESCI?
Candidates who are not eligible for general registration via the 'Competent Authority' or 'Specialist Pathway' with the Medical Board of Queensland will progress via the 'Standard Pathway'. Queensland Health will require all doctors progressing via the 'Standard Pathway' to be assessed as 'suitable' for Junior Medical Officer positions in the following specialities:
- Anaesthetics
- Obstetrics and gynaecology
- Emergency medicine
- Psychiatry
- General medicine
Implementation Phase
As this process is currently being implemented it is limited to the above specialities at this stage and will be applicable for candidates in the following situations:
- If you are currently employed as a Senior House Officer moving to a Principal House Officer position in one of the above specialities you will require a PESCI if your letter of offer is dated after the 1st of July 2009.
- If you are currently employed as a Principal House Officer by Queensland Health and you will be changing specialities into one of the above specialities you will require a PESCI.
- If you have been offered a Principal House Officer position and you are a new employee of Queensland Health, within one of the above specialities you will require a PESCI.
What you will need to provide
You will be required to provide the following at least 14 days prior to your interview:
- Copy of photo page of passport
- Copy of Curriculum Vitae in the Queensland Health standard format. Your Curriculum Vitae must contain a signed and dated statment by the applicant that 'The Curriculum Vitae is true and correct as at (insert date)'
- Copy of AMC MCQ Part 1 examination certificate
- Copy of English proficiency ef IELTS as outlined on the Medical Board of Queensland website
- Copy of Primary Source Verification of Medical Qualifications ie EICS issued by the AMC (www.amc.org.au) or proof that you have commenced the process. If you are unable to supply this please provide a copy of your Primary Medical Degree.
Who arranges the PESCI?
The Health Service District who is considering you as the successful candidate for the position will complete a request form and send it to the PESCI coordinator.

What happens in a PESCI?
A PESCI will consist of questions to explore and validate the candidate's experience as provided in the Curriculum Vitae. The panel will pose between 3 and 5 clinical scenario questions, relevant to the role description to determine the candidates ability to analyse clinical situations and apply clinical knowledge in a given situation.
The panel will ask questions or may use role plays to elicit information from the candidate.
When will you have the outcome of your PESCI?
Once the Panel have come to a conclusion, the outcome of your PESCI will be sent to you via email.
What happens if you disagree with the outcome of your PESCI?
A candidate may request a review of the assessment outcome within 3 months of receiving the report by writing to the Director of RAPTS.
Please note successful outcome of a PESCI does not guarantee registration with the Office of the Medical Board of Queensland.
