Ice breaker strategy
The Strategy was developed by a Taskforce established by the Premier and Minister for Health in 2007 to consider the Government's response to concerns about the availability and use of crystal methamphetamine ('ice') and other amphetamine-type substances.
The Strategy includes:
-
statewide illicit drug education campaigns - including the use of new technology and mass media. See
What's the buzz.
-
an assessment of drug treatment facilities,
-
law enforcement measures such as prohibiting the sale and retail display of 'ice' pipes,
-
pilot of Drug and Alcohol Brief Intervention Teams at Royal Brisbane and Women's, Gold Coast and Cairns hospitals including consultation and liaison and the delivery of brief interventions for indicated patients presenting to emergency departments,
-
the establishment of a statewide group to provide expert guidance and support to services and professionals who work with young people who use drugs and alcohol, and,
-
new funding to support youth specific alcohol and drug treatment services across the state.
